The International Union of Operating Engineers and the Alaska General Contracting community have been engaged in building Alaska since before World War II. The Operating Engineers and the Associated General Contractors have been training Alaskans for decades and to further this commitment the Operating Engineers and the Associated General Contractors, Alaska chapter, built a new training facility in the Mat-Su Valley (Palmer) in the 1980s.

The Operating Engineers’ main statewide training facility is located at Mile 1.1 of the Palmer Wasilla Highway. This facility of almost 12,000 square feet of buildings sits on 63 acres of land.

The school employs eight operating engineer instructors teaching dozens of federally registered apprentices in the classifications represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers. Some of these classifications include, but are not limited to mechanics, loader operators, drillers, crusher operators, bending machine, side boom operators, crane operators, service and rig oilers, batch plant operators, shovels, backhoes, draglines, power plant operators, boring machines, dozer and scraper operators. The program is a four year, 6000 hour apprenticeship program.
